DFW Great 100 Nurses Celebrate 2021 Class with Groundbreaking Virtual Ceremony
For Immediate Release
Usually held in person, 2021 marks the first year the nonprofit will celebrate its annual class of 100 honorees virtually. Organizations are holding watching parties, as the event will be streamed live on YouTube. The nonprofit’s celebration will also feature a unique keynote speaker: the 2021 class of nurses themselves.
April 30, 2021 (Dallas, TX) – The DFW Great 100 Nurses, a nonprofit with the mission of honoring and celebrating the nursing profession, is hosting a virtual ceremony in the midst of the pandemic to recognize its 2021 class of 100 outstanding nurses. The event will be streamed live on YouTube on Tuesday, May 4, at 3 p.m.
This marks the first time in the organization’s 31-year history that the group has celebrated online, but the group’s board is confident the spirit of the event will shine through.
“I don’t think people know what to expect,” said Victoria England, DNP, MBA , NE-BC, and president of the DFW Great 100 Nurses. “But we’ve planned a spectacular event that’s going to knock everyone’s socks off. It’s been an incredibly tough year for everyone, and we’re confident our event—even in a different format—honors the selected nurses and will be the pick-me-up everyone needs.”
This year the DFW Great 100 Nurses is forgoing a traditional keynote speaker, another first for the organization. Instead, the keynote speaker will be the nurses that were selected. The nonprofit asked each selected nurse to submit answer videos to specific questions and is going to feature them throughout the program.
“Just watching some of the videos gives me chills and brings tears to my eyes,” said Amy McCarthy, MSN, RNC-MNN, NE-BC, and president-elect of the Great 100. “These nurses have been through a great deal of trauma the past 14 months and still find ways to inspire and uplift their colleagues. It’s humbling to be part of a community like that.”
The 2021 class of Great 100 Nurses was selected from more than 700 nominees. The nomination period typically opens each fall with an early January deadline. Nominators are asked to explain why a registered nurse deserves to be honored and to include specific examples in five areas: service as a role model, leadership, community service, compassionate caregiving and significant contributions to the field. At the beginning of each calendar year, a team of judges then evaluate each nomination in a blind process. After the RN licenses are verified for the top 100 entries, the honorees are notified and announced. The 2021 list of honorees is on the Great 100 website. It includes nurses from 52 North Texas cities.
With the new event format this year, several area hospitals are organizing watch parties, and the Great 100 all-volunteer board is sending out packages prior to the event with goodies for the winners.
“There will still be celebration and joy around the event—it just won’t be as concentrated as usual,” England said.
